COMMUNIQUÉ IN VIEW OF THE MILITARY SITUATION IN GAZA
Madrid Platform for Peace in the Palestinian Israeli Conflict condemns firmly the military escalation between Israel and Hamas and the massacre that is being carried out at Gaza Stripe.
From this forum we have declared ourselves many times: the Palestinian Israeli Conflict has not a military solution, the solution can only come through political negotiations.
War state in Gaza is preceded by:
Not- recognition of the electoral triumph of Hamas on 2006 elections with international observers.
Israeli blockade of the Stripe.
Isolation imposed by the International Community to the Stripe.
Continuous incursions of Israeli Army.
Uninterrupted launching of rockets from Hamas to Southern Israel.
The weak truce reached 6 months ago between Israel and Hamas with Egyptian Government mediation has been broken continuously as a consequence of these facts.
The results of this asymmetric war until today are catastrophic, taking into account the number of dead and injured, the level of destruction and the terrible effect in the peace negotiations.
The brutal massacre in Gazas Stripe hides the fight between the leaders of Israel to gain influence on its public opinion before the next elections on the 10th of February. In this sense, the last opinion polls, according to Israeli media, shows how Ehud Baraks popularity has increased since the air attacks on Gaza began, in comparison with the previous opinions polls.
Every person committed to peace and peaceful cultures coexistence, must stand against the massacre started by Israel on the 27th of December on the Gaza Stripe.
The right of Israel to self-defence against the rockets launched by Hamas on their land does not allow it to reply exerting States terrorism, affecting the whole population of Gaza.
Defending a fair peace reached through dialogue and negotiations, does not mean to support Islamic Fundamentalism of Hamas and its postulates, neither the violent and brutal way of Israel government.
We denounce the International Community passivity, especially from the UN, whose anachronism allows that a state with the right to veto, can hinder a universal condemn.
There is no use in EU asking for the immediate ceasefire without a condemn declaration of the situation. The lack of EU capacity to intervene in the zone shows clearly the weakness of European External Politics. The silence and indifference from the future Obama Administration are nor less significant, justified by the legal limbo, generates concern about the future US position to promote a fair peace to end the Conflict.
Due to the seriousness of the situation, we urge International Community and UN to take part immediately, imposing the ceasefire to both parts and the deployment of international forces on the area, like the ones used in other conflicts (Lebanon, Bosnia, etc.)
We demand the immediate cease of Israel military operation called ¨Cast Lead¨, which has already caused catastrophic consequences through the whole region.
We demand International Community and to the EU particularly, to send humanitarian aid and necessary means for the massive attendance required by Gaza Population.
We demand the opening of Gaza Stripe to allow the free circulation of goods and people under the UN supervision.
We demand the immediate cease of every kind of violence from Hamas.
We alert about political consequences that are going to reinforce hate, revenge and military and Islamic fundamentalism in both populations.
We urge both parts to end hostilities and to resume peace conversations with international mediators. Israel must deal with Hamas.
From this Platform we urge the Spanish External Affairs Ministry too, to exert an active role and to condemn firmly the situation, because a large amount of Spanish and European population require their Governments to act in a clear and firm way in favour of a fair peace, not as they have been acting till now.
We call every intellectual, expert and civil population committed to peace, whatever their cultural and political identities are, to pronounce themselves and support this communiqué.
